Android Accounts 88 Percent Market Share in Global Smartphone Shipment

Even though the Android platform suffered some reputation hits in past few months due to its malware vulnerability, the mobile platform has continued to expand significantly.

According to a market research firm, the global smartphone shipment of Google’s Android platform has grown on a year-on-year basis. On the other hand, Apple’s iOS had witnessed a decline in the third quarter of 2016.

The Android platform has taken a huge market share from Apple’s iOS, Microsoft’s Windows OS, and BlackBerry 10. Android mobiles have become the world’s most widespread smartphone platform keeping the Apple iOS at the second place. Apple has suffered from declined sales in Chinese and African markets and at the same time, the windows phones and BlackBerry 10 devices are nearly disappeared.

As per a report from Research firm, Strategy Analytics, Android platform in the global smartphone shipment has accounted at 87.5 percent during the Q3 2016. The market share has been increased by 3.4 percent year-on-year. On contrary, the share of iOS has declined by 1.5 percent during the same time period and resulted in year-on-year share to 12.1 percent.

The share of the other mobile platforms has accounted merely 0.3 percent after falling by 2.3 percent year-on-year in global smartphone shipments.

The report further added that 328.6 million Android smartphones were shipped globally during Q3 2016 which is a growth of 10.3 percent year-on-year. On the other hand, 45.5 million Apple iPhones were shipped in the same quarter witnessing a drop of 5.2 percent year-on-year. The smartphones sporting other mobile platforms witnessed 1.3 million units shipment, which is a massive drop of 84.1 percent. The total smartphone shipment worldwide has accounted to 375.4 million specifying a 6 percent rise year-on-year.

Although the Android platform has been criticized for its malware vulnerability, the platform has managed to dominate the global smartphone market. Google has rolled out the latest Android 7.0 Nougat OS which has added some really good features in smartphones. Also, the introduction of the Google Pixel and Google Pixels XL smartphones has attracted consumers by a bunch of new features and hardware capabilities. The market share of iOS might get swelled as the latest iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus has launched in September. However, very Android smartphone manufacturers are really making money from the device sales, while Apple’s profit margin is always remains high on the expensive iPhone devices.
