OnePlus 3T vs OnePlus 3: Should you upgrade?

The Chinese OEM, OnePlus mobiles has recently launched a new upgraded OnePlus 3T smartphone. The newly launched OnePlus 3T looks the same as its original OnePlus 3 Smartphone. However, there are a few upgrades under the hood. To count differences, the new variant features latest Snapdragon SoC, improved front-facing camera, new 128GB storage model, and larger battery.

The OnePlus 3T smartphone is pricier than the original one and it will be made available in the US market starting from November 22 and in the UK from November 28. The OnePlus 3T 64GB model will be available for a price os $439 (roughly Rs 30,000) and $479 for 128GB model; while the OnePlus 3 64GB model was launched at $399. Let’s have a look at the major differences between the new and the previous OnePlus 3 models.

Display and Design

There is no difference in design and display of both the smartphones. Both devices offer the same 5.5-inch full HD (1080×1920 pixels) Optic-AMOLED Display with metallic design. The only difference is that the new OnePlus 3T will be offered in new Gunmetal color variant instead of Graphite alongside a Soft Gold option.

Processor

The major difference which could be the decision influencer in between OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T is obviously its chipset. The latest mobile, OnePlus 3T features a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 quad-core SoC clocked at 2.35GHz, while the OnePlus 3 packs a 2.15GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 quad-core SoC. Both devices feature Adreno 530 GPU paired with 6GB of RAM to offer flawless experience.

Storage

The OnePlus 3 smartphone has 64GB of internal storage which is non-expandable in nature. That means if you are a high memory consuming Smartphone user, then ‘Insufficient storage available’ could be the greatest annoyance for you. The new OnePlus 3T Smartphone offers a larger 128GB storage model for such users alongside the 64GB variant.

Camera

The OnePlus 3T offers a 16MP primary rear camera with Sony IMX298 sensor, PDAF, 4K video recording which is similar to the OnePlus 3 smartphone. However, the bump up has seen in OnePlus 3T’s front camera. The latest mobile offers a 16MP front facing camera which is double while compared with OnePlus 3’s 8MP camera.

Battery and Connectivity

Lastly, OnePlus 3T offers a larger 3400mAh battery compared to the 3000mAh battery of OnePlus 3. Both smartphones support the Dash Charge (5V 4A) fast charging technology.

The battery size improvement appears to be the company’s take on its rivals which are offering premium smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge which offers a 3600mAh battery and Google Pixel XL that offers a 3450mAh battery.

The connectivity options on both smartphones have remained the same which include dual-SIM, Wi-Fi, USB Type-C, Bluetooth, NFC, and GPS.

Should you buy OnePlus 3T?

Considering that the OnePlus 3 smartphone is just five months older that the new one, it will be interesting to see how OnePlus mobiles sell both the devices in major markets. The differences in between these two smartphones are not that compelling to go for an upgraded variant if you already own the OnePlus 3 smartphone.
