Xiaomi Redmi 4 Review: New Contender in Budget Smartphone Space

Xiaomi greeted the Indian market in 2014. Since then it has created a space for itself owing to affordable pricing with impressive specifications. The love of its customers made it an instant hit and company is soaring high in success. The company has launched many devices recently including the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4A.

The Chinese giant is back with its plain old successful strategy pricing Redmi Note 4 at Rs. 12,999 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory and Redmi 4A enjoys being the cheapest smartphone at Rs. 5,999. They did not stop with this, instead came up with another masterstroke of sandwiching these price points at Rs. 8,999 for their new announcement Xiaomi Redmi 4 which takes forward the legacy of Redmi 3S.

We bring you a few points of this new announcement.

1. Slight step-up in design.

  • Metallic unibody design.
  • Compact and comfortable on hand usage.
  • Volume rockers and power buttons on the right and dual hybrid SIM tray slot on the left.
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack, secondary microphone ad infrared blaster on the top.
  • Micro USB with speaker grills on each side at the bottom (the left one is a microphone).
  • Fairly similar camera and fingerprint placement at the back and 2.5D curved screen in the front.
  • Gold and matte black colour options.
  • Size: 139.2X70X8.7 mm
  • Weight: 150g.
  • A miniature version of Redmi Note 4.
  • 5” 720p IPS LCD display. Pixel density: 294 ppi.
  • A warmer colour on display.
  • Bright indoors but struggle outdoors.

2. Connectivity

  • Accurate Fingerprint scanner but responds slowly.
  • Earpiece performs fine but the single bottom firing speaker is not impressive.

3. Hardware and Software

  • New Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 chipset is quite similar to Snapdragon 430 of Redmi 3S or 3S Prime.
  • Snapdragon 435 is an Octa-core chipset clocked at 1.4GHz and is paired with the same Adreno 505 GPU.
  • 3GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage expandable via micro SD card.
  • Out of 32 GB internal storage, 24 GB is user accessible.
  • Runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with MIUI 8.2 on top.
  • Rarely lags in the UI.
  • Features like Dual-apps, One hand mode, Lite mode, Quick Ball, Second space.

4. Camera

  • Both cameras can record 1080p videos 30 fps.
  • Quick to focus the subject.
  • Different modes as Panorama, Timer, Audio, Manual, Straighten, etc.
  • Numerous filters and impressive effects.

Conclusion

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 is a good option in the budget segment due to various reasons. The device boasts powerful Snapdragon 430 processor, larger battery capacity, big 5-inch display, and decent cameras. However, the display features only HD resolution which is a big turn down. Furthermore, the Snapdragon 435 processor is restricted to the acceleration of up 1.4GHz, which might create lags while multitasking.

Verdict

But, all and all, it's a good offering. Considering the craze of Xiaomi mobiles in India, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 will also get accepted widely in a short span of time.
