Gone are the days when you had to burn a hole in your pocket to buy smartphones with latest technologies and features. Now, you can expect decent specifications and features even at sub-Rs 10,000 segment. The budget smartphone segment in India always witnesses new launches. One of the new launches includes the Tecno Camon i. It is a budget-friendly device with good specification and eye-catching design.

Tecno is a Chinese smartphone vendor which has launched a few products in India. The company owns another mobile brand- Itel. The latest Tecno Camon i smartphone is priced at Rs 8,999 in India. The phone is claimed to have extraordinary camera capabilities. It will go neck-to-neck with other budget smartphones of brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, etc. But how the Camon i performs in real life? Let’s find out this in our detailed review.

The phone brags a polycarbonate body with curved edges. It is a lightweight device which fits perfectly in hands. The right edge has volume and power buttons. The left edge boasts a SIM card tray which has a dedicated microSD card slot with dual SIM module. On the bottom, there is a micro USB charging port and speaker grille. The 3.5mm headphone jack is offered at the top.

Coming to the front panel, there is a 5.65-inch Infinity Display. There is no physical button on the front. The selfie module is offered on the top with a dedicated LED flash. On the rear, there is a primary camera with Quad LED flash module.

The display of the device is just HD+ that means you can get the highest resolution of 720p (720×1440 pixels) on the handset. It has 2.5D curved glass which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The viewing angles of the display are good; however, you may face issues when using it outdoors. The display is not that bright to be visible properly in bright days.

The phone offers a 5.65-inch HD+ (720×1440 pixels) IPS display. Under the hood, there is a MediaTek MT6737 quad-core processor which is clocked at 1.3GHz. The device is powered by a 3GB RAM and has 32GB of internal storage which later can be extended up to 128GB via microSD card.

For photography, there is a 13MP primary rear camera with f/2.0 aperture. The photography is enhanced by the quad-LED flash module. Up front, there is a 13MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and selfie flash module. The phone runs on Android Nougat OS with Tecno’s custom HiOS UI on top.

The latest Tecno mobile comes with decent hardware specification. The specifications are similar to most of the phones available in the market. It packs MediaTek MT6737 which is an entry-level chipset. So, you can’t expect smooth performance when loading heavy apps. Also, graphics intensive games like Shadow Fight 3 won’t be that smooth due to its low-end chipset.

Although it is a camera-centric smartphone, it doesn’t offer any out-of-the-box camera feature. The built-in camera app is basic and can be used to capture photos and videos. There are various modes like beauty HDR and panorama. The phone is powered by a 3050mAh battery which can survive up to 9.5 hours of continuous usage.

Verdict

Tecno Camon i is a nice package of design and good hardware offering. The phone won’t disappoint you in day-to-day tasks; however, don’t expect heavy performance from it. With a price tag in sub-Rs 10,000, the Camon i will go one-on-one with Smartron t.phone P, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, and InFocus Vision 3. Among these, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is the top-selling smartphone in India (Source: Counterpoint Research). If you are searching for a good camera smartphone, then the Moto G5 could be a better option for you in this price range.
