DataWind to Introduce Low-Cost 4G Mobiles before Diwali in India

The low-priced mobile manufacturer, DataWind is about to launch a 4G budget phone at the starting price of Rs 3,000 in next month before the Diwali festive. The company manufactures the ultra-low cost smartphones in India and now is headed to launch three variants of 4G mobile phones where the high-end variant will cost less than Rs 5,000 a unit.

We are planning to roll out our 4G handset very soon, perhaps before Diwali, said Suneet Singh Tuli who is the CEO at DataWind. He also mentioned that the entry-level 4G phones will be available at Rs 3,000 while the top variant of our 4G budget mobile phones will be priced within the Rs 5,000 bracket.

The company will sell their 4G mobile phones with 1GB, 2GB and 3GB of RAM variants with a built-in storage capacity of 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. The 4G mobile phones are said to have nearly all the features which the other smartphones have.

The company is claiming to provide free internet browsing for one year along with their phones. The company is aiming to earn merely 10 percent margin on sales for these low-cost mobiles.

DataWind will manufacture these 4G budget mobile phones in its plants at Hyderabad and Amritsar. The company already has a set of budget mobile phones starting at Rs 1,500. DataWind claims to have a 76 percent of market share in India’s tablet market below the Rs 5,000 segment.

Furthermore, the company is aiming to offer unlimited data plans at Rs 99, as the company has applied for a license under virtual network operator policy.

To recall, DataWind had released its PocketSurfer 2G4X and PocketSurfer 3G4Z smartphones earlier this year which were priced at Rs 2,499 and Rs 3,999. These devices were also featured with the one-year free internet browsing offer by the company.

The free internet is accessible via the UbiSurfer browser app. However, the free internet doesn’t include audio/video streaming or downloading; only browsing is free of cost. For enjoying these services, users will have to buy separate top-up vouchers.
